Titles- 'Skyfall'

Opening Sequence- 'Legally Blonde'

The opening sequence of Legally Blonde is to establish what the genre is, RomCom. Its also to show how the stereotypes of men and women within a RomCom.

Camerawork
We first see a close up of a letter with Elle written on it, straight away we can tell that the letter holds some sort of importance. The close up of the name indicates that maybe Elle is a significant character to the movie and we start to ask questions about who she is.  Next we can see a close up of the back of a girls head, we can tell that she is blonde and a typical girl because she is brushing her hair. This creates mystery because we assume that maybe this girl is Elle.
An establishing shot is used on the Delta sign which tells us that the movie may be set at a university. The establishing shot also tells us that the characters are relatively young and maybe teenagers.
When we go inside the house a birds eye view is used to show how busy the house is. this tells us that the main character hold a lot of importance because it seems like everyone in the house is there for her. It also shows how young the characters are because they all there to party.

Editing
Cross- cutting is used between the letter on the floor and the girl on the chair, this tells us that there is a connection between the two and shows that maybe the letter is for the girl.
When the door opens slow motion is used to show the importance of the card but also for the audience to take in the surroundings, which show typical girls hanging out with each other. It also makes us focus more on the card and creates questions such as who's name is on the card? and What is the card for?

Mise-En-Scene
The costumes that the girls are wearing inside the house are all typical girly clothes. This also links in with the props used a hair brush and a 'Homecoming Queen' banner which tell the audience that the main character is very much a girly girl.
As the opening sequence goes on the credits appear, the credits are in pink bubbly writing which link in with the characters personality. The title of the movie appears over the girls blonde hair which contrasts to the name of the movie.
The setting of the movie is in a sorority and frat house on a university campus. This tells the audience that the characters are in their youth. Its also a stereotypical setting for a university.

Sound
When we walk through the house with one of the characters we can hear faint high pitched squeals which represents the girls. This shows them to be having fun and enjoying themselves. It also flows throughout the opening sequence to show how happy the girls are.
The soundtrack that goes with the opening sequence relates typically to girls, as there is a female singer, singing about herself. The lyrics also consist of 'perfect world' this shows how the main character thinks her life is perfect. The lyrics 'perfect world' also link in with the slow motion editing as it shows how the girl doesn't want her day to end she wants it to go on forever.

Opening Sequence - 'Sixth Sense'

The opening sequence for 'Sixth Sense' is effective as the genre is instantly recognisable. Through the use of Mise-en-scene, Camerawork, Editing and Sound we are introduced to the characters and the films plot.

Mise-en-scene
At the start of the clip we first see the credits which are all in one font, this makes us believe that the film is a thriller because the font is what we would usually associate with danger or horror.
Then we can see a row of candles and cards made by children, even though we have yet to meet the characters we are told to believe that they are successful and well loved by a lot of people, they hold some degree of importance. The candles suggest that they are having a relaxing evening. The importance of the characters is also represented through the setting as the house that they are in is a big and wealthy looking, from this we can tell the characters have high authority.
The clothes that the couple are wearing make them seem rich and wealthy but when we see the little boy we can see that he is a lot poorer. We can tell from the little boys clothing that he isn't like a lot of other little boys and might be shy. This makes us feel sympathy towards the boy as he looks cold and sad.

Camerawork
At the start of the scene we see a long shot is used from outside in the hallway, this gives us a look at the couple from another perspective and makes us seem them differently then to what we did before.
When the couple are upstairs a quick pan is used from Malcolm to Vincent, this draws our attention away from Malcolm to Vincent. This make us see how bad the situation is and causes a sense of mystery as we want to why Vincent has broken in to their house. The use of steadicam at this moment shows how out of control the situation. It also shows how someone from such a high authority hasn't gained power over what is happening.
The close up of Vincent makes us feel sympathetic towards him because we see how scared and distraught he is. Soft Focus is also used to shows irrelevant information which builds up the suspense atmosphere.

Editing
The opening sequence starts of with the credits which are all slowly edited together which tells is who the actors are but also emphasis the genre, we can ell that it is a thriller because its slow and creates suspense.
When the couple are talking a shot reverse shot is used to show their conversation. This gives us an insight to what the couple are like, we can tell that they are in love and wanting a romantic evening. When the camera switches to the man it stays there for longer than when on the women, this suggests that the man has the power in the relationship instead of the women.
After Vincent shoots Malcolm and himself a fade into black is used. This shows that some time has passed before we see the next scene. This makes the audience asks questions such as what has happened to Malcolm and Vincent? and What is about to happen next?
Before Vincent shoots Malcolm another shot reverse shot is used between the two but instead of the camera staying longer of Malcolm its stays longer on Vincent and slowly starts to zoom into his face. This creates tension beteen the two men but also makes the audience see how much emotional pain Vincent is in.

Sound
When the credits appear on screen slow 'sting' like music is played which tells us that the genre is thriller. When we see the couple downstairs together the diegetic sound tells us how classy they are, as the music seems like slow dancing music.
When the couple are upstairs facing Vincent the music stops every few seconds. This constant stopping creates mystery and suspense as we have yet to find what is about to happen the three people.
When Vincent shoots his gun the sound effects are louder then what it normally would be. This puts emphasis on the fact that the main character has already been shot, it also creates a sense of danger because we think that Malcolm is dead and we want to find out if he's alive or not. While Vincent is picking up his gun the non-diegetic music is misleading as it sounds happy and joyful where as in reality Malcolm has been severely injured.

Opening Sequences

What is an opening sequence?

An opening sequence is to introduce the setting of a film and the characters to the audience. Its also there to draw an audience in as it establishes the type of genre the movie is. Usually an opening sequence will consist of the title of the film and the actors, directors names. Continuity editing is usually used in an opening sequence to make if flow and to create unanswered questions.                                  Clueless

From watching the opening sequence of Clueless we can tell that the genre may be a romcom as we see girly girls doing typical girly things which usually links in with the characters from a romcom. The characters in a romcom are usually a boy and a girl, the boy being very masculine and the girl being very girly, in the opening sequence of Cueless we can tell that the girl in it is a stereotypical girl within a romcom. The opening sequence also introduces us to the main character and the characters friends.

Se7en

From the opening sequence of Se7en we can see that the genre is a thriller because we are instantly drawn to the objects in the opening sequence which may suggest death or fear. The opening sequence for  Se7en is dark in lighting and colours with a few bursts of light colours this also links in with the genre of thriller because they usually are films with low key lighting and colours. In this opening sequence we aren't introduced to any of the characters we can only see what the characters are doing which gives us an insight to what their personality may be like.

                                                                      Fast and Furious
The opening sequence for Fast and Furious 7 instantly tells us that the genre of the movie is action-adevnture as we right away see that the setting has been blown up and people have died.Action-adeventures usually have lots of fights, bombs, death in it and this opening sequence has all of that in it.  Normally in opening sequences we are introduced to the main protagonists however in this opening sequence we are introduced to the antagonist, this tells the audience how dangerous he is and how much fear he will create throughout the film.

The Brief

Planning

Our brief is to research, plan, create and evaluate the opening sequence and titles to a new fiction film that lasts no longer than 2 minutes.

Preliminary Project

For the Preliminary Project we has to create a short opening sequence for a TV show. We had to include three different actions such as opening a door, sitting down in a chair and a conversation between two people sitting across from one another. We also had to use certain camerawork like match on action shot, shot reverse shot and the 180 rule. For the editing we had to use continuity editing to make the edits between shots as unobtrusive as possible.

WWW:
  • We made sure to use a transition to show the change in the 180 degree rule.
  • The shot reverse shot shows clear conversation.
  • Match on action shot is fluid.
EBI:
  • The zoom at the start breaks continuity
  • The shots jump between each other and don't make sense,
